Did you know that the longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds? Or that in Pennsylvania, it's illegal to sing in the bathtub?
You didn't? Well don't worry. There are lots of things in life that we don't all know. The truth is, unless you've ever needed to put up web site, you probably haven't come across web hosting either. Well we're very glad you're here with us now - so we'll do our best to explain.
A little bit about the Internet.
The Internet is an global network of computers, all linked together thanks to the networks that have been built by telecoms firms and internet service providers. You will largely use your computer to browse web sites, but there are other computers that are specifically designed to send web site data - these are called servers. There's a picture of some servers just above our friendly chicken. When you look up a web site, your computer sends out a request to that server for the web site data - the server then sends back the web site files to your browser, and your web browser interprets them and displays them on your screen.
Your home on the net.
We specialise in running those servers. When you buy a web hosting account from us - you're buying a little piece of that server's resources to power your site. We take all the hassle out of it for you by ensuring that the server software is kept secure and up-to-date, and we provide you with the tools you need to get your site online which are all accessible from an intuitive hosting control panel. You can either use our easy site builder to make your site, or upload your own to your hosting account.
Our job is then to ensure that your site loads as fast as possible and that it's online - all the time. We run advanced monitoring systems to keep close tabs on how our servers and network are performing, and we have a wonderful team who work 24 hours a day, ready to respond to any potential problem that might occur, or to give you a hand getting your site up and running.
A fortress designed for hosting.
Even the building where the servers are has been designed from the ground up to minimise the chance of web sites going offline. Diverse power feeds, backed by emergency batteries and generators ensure the servers have an uninterruptible source of power regardless of any surges or failures in the mains supply. The air in the server rooms is chilled and purified to ensure that servers run cool and remain free from dust that could cause malfunction. The servers are also connected to multiple Internet connections to ensure that there is always a route for the data to take should one of those network connections fail. Finally, the building has high levels of security and defences against natural disasters to ensure the servers remain safe and secure. Check out our data center photo tour to see what one looks like!
All this for just a few cents a day.
It doesn't cost much to give your web site the best home on the net - our web hosting plans start at less than the cost of a burger, and are suitable for even really busy sites. Of course if your site becomes the next Facebook or YouTube then you'll need more than room on one of our shared hosting servers - but we can meet the needs of even the most demanding web site with our cloud hosting or managed hosting services.
